A fire broke out next to Ushuaïa Ibiza, irreparably damaging two restaurants and a bar whose grand opening was imminent.
Two restaurants and a bar next to Ushuaïa Ibiza in Sant Josep were damaged beyond repair after a fire swept through the area in the early hours of Tuesday, June 10. Six people suffered from minor smoke inhalation injuries, and firefighters contained the blaze within an hour.
The bar was set to open its doors to the public this week. In addition to the complete destruction of the three establishments around 2:40am, 30 families had to be evacuated from 60 nearby apartments until the fire was extinguished later in the morning, according to Diario De Ibiza. Only one of the residential units was damaged, and seemingly by soot rather than open flames.
Video of the blaze shared on Instagram shows enormous plumes of fire billowing out of the entrance of a building across the street from Ushuaïa Ibiza. Sant Josep Mayor Vicent Roig expressed his appreciation for the venue’s staff, “who collaborated and helped with the evacuation,” in conversation with Noudiari.
By 7am, the Urban Planning Department arrived on site to ensure that the structural integrity of the burned-out buildings wouldn’t pose further safety hazards. Municipal staff who oversee the nearby coasts and beaches also came in to help clean up the area.
Ushuaïa Ibiza’s team has not issued a statement on the fire at the time of writing. The evening after the fire broke out, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike performed at the superclub as planned, and Calvin Harris’ Friday evening event still looks to move forward.
Ibiza authorities are currently looking into how the Sant Josep fire broke out. “We don’t yet know the cause of the fire, but everything is being investigated and reviewed, especially on the terraces where the flames appear to have started,” said the mayor.
