Olie Bassweight boasted releases on Paradise Lost, Section 8 Records, and his own Bassweight Recordings.
The worldwide dubstep community mourns the loss of Oliver Joseph Henry Hayes aka Olie Bassweight, a New Zealand DJ and producer found dead in Wellington on Saturday. No cause of death has been given for the 41-year-old.
Hayes sister Louise broke the news via Facebook on Monday morning local time. “Very, very sorry to let those who loved my brother Olie know….he was unexpectedly found dead in Wellington on Saturday night,” she wrote. “His light was like no other. We are heartbroken and thrown into tumultuous grief and shock. I don’t know what else to say.”
According to The Economic Times, police responded to a call at 7:15 to a house in Newtown and discovered his body there. Detective Inspector Nick Pritchard confirmed that an investigation was ongoing, including a post-mortem and forensics examination.
In her post, Louise Hayes hinted that there may be more to her brother’s passing than meets the eye. “It seems something terrible might have happened to him,” she wrote. “We wait for answers.”
Between collaborations and remixes, Hays had rubbed shoulders with early US dubstep artists like Antiserum, Kelly Dean, TZR, and Triage. From 2011-2014, he had released on labels like Section 8 and Paradise Lost, even going as far as to launch his own imprint called Bassweight Recordings.
Perhaps the most notable entry in his discography was The Ghost In The Machine, his 2012 debut studio-length album. He also released efforts like 2015’s The War On Consciousness and 2021’s False Idols EP.
We here at EDM Identity express our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Oliver Joseph Henry Hayes aka Olie Basseight during what can only be a difficult time.
