Grant Jackson hosted event series like Taco Tuesdays, Soup Sessions, and After Hours Brunch in various Detroit venues.
This past weekend, Detroit mourned a beloved fixture of its dance music community named Grant Jackson, who passed away at age 35. No cause of death has been given at the time of writing.
Jackson’s family confirmed his death in a post to his Facebook page. “We all love and miss Grant deeply,” it reads. “Our family is going to view him this afternoon and retrieve his remains. We are planning a celebration of Grant’s life at our home in Northville, exact date and time to be announced in the next few days.”
“Grant was an anomaly in the best way — someone who didn’t care about cliques or egos, just about bringing people together and making magic happen,” wrote Detroit Techno Militia Co-Founder Angie Linder in a tribute. “His love for music and community was contagious, and his energy made everything feel a little more fun, a little more possible.”
Grant Jackson first got acquainted with electronic music by making beats and playing live PA sets of experimental hip-hop with his friends. But it was in 2009 that he started hosting dubstep events, filling a void that still lingered in the Detroit scene before the genre broke through to the mainstream.
In recent years, Jackson’s repertoire expanded to include styles like funk, disco, and drum and bass, often with a jazz and R&B inflection. His most popular residency was called Taco Tuesdays, but he also hosted events called Soup Sessions and After Hours Brunch in Detroit venues like Magic Stick, TV Lounge, UFO Bar, and Spkrbox.
Grant Jackson is survived by his wife, Marcellia, and two children. We here at EDM Identity express our sincere condolences to his family and loved ones during what can only be a difficult time.
