The Black Box is about to turn eight years old. Bass music artists Pushloop, Thelem, and Nomine will help make it a milestone to remember.
Since 2016, The Black Box has stood as a bastion of underground bass music in Denver, where the constantly evolving range of styles is known to thrive. Next month marks the venue’s eighth birthday, and celebrations are in order.
Billed for The Black Box 8 Year Anniversary are three celebrated artists: Pushloop, Thelem, and Nomine. Each paints with a slightly different palette of the bass music spectrum. Collectively, they will give Denver music lovers a proper education, ensuring nobody stands still on The Black Box’s dimly lit dancefloor.
Pushloop is a mainstay of West Coast bass whose talent as a producer eventually took him to stages across North America. He released his debut EP, Jamila, on beloved Bay Area imprint Mallabel. Since then, his dubstep-leaning output has landed on labels like Deep Dark & Dangerous, ShadowTrix Music, and Heavy Recordings.
Denver music fans can also look forward to Thelem taking them on a journey through styles like grime, hip-hop, and drum and bass. Truly, though, genres don’t dictate the direction of his DJ sets or music recordings. Foreboding atmospheres, complex rhythms, and a penchant for experimentation are the only common threads tying together all of his work.
Nomine rounds out the bill, bringing with him the authority of a UK tastemaker whose career dates back to the ’90s. With jungle and drum and bass as his point of origin, he went on to run pirate radio stations, release under various aliases on labels like Metalheadz and Function Records, and even become a music program lecturer at Bedford University.
The Black Box is the brainchild of Sub.mission, a Denver promoter whose tenure in bass music preceded the mainstream dubstep explosion during the 2010-2015 EDM boom by several years. Between the venue and Sub.mission’s in-house booking agency, the outfit commands the necessary leverage to remain decidedly underground while still running viable as a business in the oversaturated dance music industry.
