“Have fun, take care of each other, and don’t use any open flames!” reads Wub Witch’s post promoting the Lost Lands meetups.

When we talk about safe spaces for femme festival-goers, mosh pits aren’t typically the first setting that comes to mind. Wub Witch is thinking outside the box, though. The clothing brand has organized not one, but two girls-only mosh pits at Lost Lands, whose 2024 edition takes place at Legend Valley in Thornville, Ohio from September 20-22.

According to Wub Witch’s Instagram post promoting the meetups, one starts during Vampa‘s set at the Thursday, September 19 early entry pre-party at the Crater Stage at 4:15pm. The other will take place the following Saturday, September 21 at the Prehistoric Paradox stage at 4pm as Emorfik plays. A photo op is scheduled 15 minutes after each one starts.

Wub Witch’s post instructs participants to “LOOK OUT FOR THE GIRL PIT FLAG,” saying, “Have fun, take care of each other, and don’t use any open flames!”

In White Riot: Punk Rock and the Politics of Race, Maxwell Tremblay wrote that the term mosh pit dates back to 1979 or 1980, when the lead singer of seminal hardcore band Bad Brains impersonated a Jamaican accent while shouting “mash it, mash down Babylon.” The primal activity gained a new audience in the heavy dubstep scene during the EDM explosion of 2010-2015.

Wub Witch’s Lost Lands meetups are by no means the first girls-only mosh pits. They have previously taken place at gatherings like Reading Festival and Hellfest. Last year, Shaquille O’Neal aka DJ Diesel even started one while playing the Twin Peaks stage at Outside Lands.

Wub Witch is gearing up to launch a homepage for their girls-only mosh pit concept. Sign up to receive updates on the placeholder website.
