The Chicago house music scene is once again mourning the loss of one of its own. DANNN, a DJ, producer, and visual artist whose real name is Daniel Brookman, has died of undisclosed causes.
A member of Brookman’s family confirmed his passing to Resident Advisor on Friday, August 2. While neither his cause of death nor the exact date that it happened are publicly known at the time of writing, the caption of his July 31 Instagram post promoting his final album, the slightest dreadful electricity, read, “i’m so sorry for leaving but i can’t take the pain any longer.”
Brookman released his debut album, Interludes, in 2013, proving himself capable of applying his unique signature sound to a wide range of styles under the dance music umbrella. He was nonetheless known for more than his consistent musical output, some of which landed on labels like Trax Couture and Local Action. His Instagram account shows that he was also highly active as a visual artist, and he famously designed the artwork for all of his own releases.
Writing was also one of Brookman’s pursuits. On his personal website, he published pieces on classic video game franchises like The Legend of Zelda and Mega Man Battle Network.
One of Brookman’s more notable recorded music releases was Cyclorama, a 2022 album on which he collaborated with fellow Chicagoan artist Ariel Zetina. In addition to the slightest dreadful electricity, the final effort he released last month, Brookman uploaded 40 new tracks to his SoundCloud account on July 31.
