Creamfields intends to curb its environmental impact with Cleanfields, a new, three-year initiative that includes education for attendees and more.
Festivals might be plenty of fun for those who are looking to escape the real world for a weekend, but the impact that these experiences have is enormous on the environment. While major festivals largely ignored this fact for decades, many have begun to embrace sustainability initiatives in recent years by implementing programs that educate and inspire action among their attendees. Now, one of the world’s largest festivals, Creamfields, is the latest to step up to the challenge with the launch of Cleanfields.
Cleanfields is a comprehensive, three-year plan from Cream HQ to preserve their expansive 600-acre festival site. The behemoth brand has teamed up with betternotstop, a sustainability impact agency, to bring this new initiative to life. The agency will be on-site at the festival’s campgrounds to engage with attendees, offer incentives to those who are proactive about sustainability, and encourage them to adopt a pledge to keep the grounds clean.
The Cleanfields pledge includes action items for attendees to remember when attending Creamfields this year and in the future. These include taking your tent home, minimizing what you bring to the festival by utilizing their on-site store, opting for public transport to the festival grounds, and using recycling points throughout the campgrounds for reusable materials.
Creamfields is set to continue its 15-year partnership with Big Green Coach, a sustainable travel coach company in the UK. Festivalgoers are also encouraged to fill all the sets in their cars or take trains to nearby stations, where a shuttle service will take them directly to the festival grounds.
Those who participate in the recycling program by filling a full bin bag will be able to earn points to redeem for everything from stage experiences to merch and more. Additionally, if you return 50 cups to the cup exchange, you’ll earn a free drink token, and there will also be free water refill points available to curb single-use plastic waste from the festival.
Beyond the action items for attendees, Creamfields has also committed to increasing its use of biofuel for generators while continuing to reduce its fuel consumption overall.
