Known for singles like “Sunchyme” and “Carnaval de Paris,” Dario G had struggled with rectal cancer for roughly a year.
Dario G, an English producer perhaps best known for his role in hit dance tracks like “Sunchyme” and “Carnaval de Paris,” has passed away at age 53 on Monday following a battle with cancer.
A year ago almost to the day, Dario G (real name Paul Spencer) announced on X that he had been diagnosed with stage four rectal cancer. “Hard to write this. I’ve just found out that I’ve got stage 4 rectal cancer and a shadow on my liver,” he shared. “That’s damn hard to read too I’m sure. Gonna give it my best shot though.”
In a December conversation with The Mirror, Spencer projected positivity, saying that he was doing “really well” and that “the chemo and the medication arrested and stopped the pain.” Last month, however, he was forced to cancel his first performance of the year at the County Ground stadium in Swindon due to his illness.
Then, on Monday, his family shared the news of his passing via his social media accounts. “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Paul Spencer earlier today,” they wrote. “He was positive until the end but this was one battle he could not fight anymore.”
Dario G was originally the name of of a three-person group that also included Scott Rosser and Stephen Spencer. They first grew famous for “Sunchyme” in 1997 and then kept the momentum going with “Carnaval de Paris” the following year. The former single sampled “Life in a Northern Town” by The Dream Academy, and the latter was recorded for the 1998 World Cup in Paris.
The Dario G discography also includes albums like Sunmachine, In Full Colour, and Hola. In the past few years, Paul Spencer, who hailed from Crewe, performed and released music under the stage name as a solo act.
