Hi Austin! Thank you so much for chatting with us! I wanted to kick things off by touching on your sound. You’ve been able to effortlessly blend soul, R&B, and dance music into your own signature style. How have your Harlem roots influenced your sound and shaped your music? What else inspires you?
Growing up and seeing all the music around me really helped make my sound what it is today. And over the course of time, traveling to places like Brazil, I came back with these new sounds, taking what I liked from them and making it my own thing.
Your debut EP, Breathwork, really embodies that soulful, eclectic energy that breathes life to any dance floor. If you could describe Breathwork in three words, which words would you use and why?
Cohesive, intentional, and captivating are the words I would use because it really solidified who I am and led me to go in the direction I wanted to go. I had this vision of where I wanted to take it. I wanted to have that soul, really mix it with the dance and R&B elements, and bring people who don’t really do dance music into my world.
You’ve just kicked off the Fresh Air Tour in support of the EP. What makes this tour different than the others you’ve done in the past?
I did the Breathwork Tour last year, and it was in the middle of the rollout for the project, so I was doing the tour before the project even dropped. But this time, it’s already dropped, so the people in the crowd know the songs and are more familiar with me. In August, I also did a Boiler Room set, and that created new hype around me. Fresh Air is a combination of all that together.
How has the energy been so far? Have any of the cities stood out to you?
High energy, honestly. I kind of envisioned it to be like that, but I didn’t expect it to be this crazy. Sometimes, you have to bring down the tempo, and people are still energetic, so It’s been cool to watch but New York City was definitely a highlight moment for me.
You’ve also just announced your first Las Vegas residency, which kicks off this week! How has the preparation for a residency been different from touring?
Being my first time, I don’t really know what to expect. It’s been cool to be a sponge again, and a student learning what’s expected. I have some type of preparation, but it’s not like the tour because it’s more catered to the people who come to Vegas. They can still get to know a little bit more about me, but they can also have the time of their life, whether it’s celebrating a birthday or an anniversary. Vegas has all types of people, and it’s been fun preparing for that.
What is something you are the most excited about about the opportunity to have your own residency?
The most exciting part is being part of the Wynn family, because the Wynn is so legendary. Being associated with that and having an opportunity to play ball in the big league is really cool.
You’re juggling a lot with the residency and the tour. What helps to keep you grounded in the midst of all the late nights and traveling?
I think the key is you got to know how to sleep on flights and have really good time management. It’s really a marathon and keeping my mental health well is definitely important. In the past, burnouts have happened, so you gotta really try to stay balanced.
So, what’s next for Austin Millz?
Music is definitely coming in the summertime. I had to do music for the summer.
Your energy feels like summertime, so that makes me excited. Well, that wraps things up! Thanks again for chatting with us, and I look forward to seeing what you do next.
