Afro Nation: A Movement includes interviews with such amapiano figureheads as Burna Boy and Musa Keys.
Despite the growing popularity of amapiano and Afrobeats, dance music fans in the West have limited exposure to the genres. A new mini documentary looks to help change that. Afro Nation: A Movement is now live on YouTube, and it casts a necessary light on these styles of dance music.
The film was shot during the 2023 edition of Afro Nation Portugal, which took place on the beachside of Praia Da Rocha in Portimão. In addition to interviews with festival founders SMADE and Obi Asika, segments with musicians like Musa Keys, The Compozers, Camidoh, and Black Sherif illuminate the rich history of amapiano and Afrobeats.
The precise origins of amapiano (which loosely translates to “the pianos” in Nguni) remain murky. It famously emerged in Johannesburg and Pretoria, South Africa, and fuses elements of classic house music with Johannesburg’s own kwaito style.
Amapiano is generally understood to have came into being in the early 2010 thanks to notable forerunners like MFR Souls, DJ Stokie, Kabza De Small, and DJ Maphorisa. By 2019, it became the most popular genre on TikTok South Africa, and 2022 saw Beatport introduce an “Amapiano” genre category.
Afro Nation: A Movement also delves into the much longer story of Afrobeats. Among those who speak on its history in the mini documentary are Afrobeats historian Adesope “Shopsydoo” Olajide and BBC Radio 1Xtra Host Eddie Kadi.
“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who plays a part, from our fans and community travelling from around the world, and our phenomenal artists gracing the stage, to the dedicated teams working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the safety, comfort, and enjoyment for all,” reads a statement from the Afro Nation Portugal organizers at the end of the film. “Thank you for being part of this incredible journey. Together we move.”
Afro Nation Portugal is slated to return to Portimão, Portugal from June 26-28. Purchase tickets and find additional information on the event website.
