FRAY Studio have set five Chase & Status songs to varying depictions of a night out.
After more than two decades in the game, it’s safe to say Chase & Status know a thing or two about partying. In collaboration with FRAY Studio, the UK drum and bass duo have sought to capture the range of feelings evoked by a night out in a short film set to five of their songs.
Eeach act of the film depicts the same young man at a rave — but through a different figurative lens. In the first, a mosh pit erupts around him as the rugged sawtooths of Chase & Status’ 2008 single “Smash TV” play out, whereas act two captures the collective energy of rave and is set to the comparatively euphoric “Count On Me” featuring Moko.
The young man finds himself alone taking a pill in a bathroom stall to the anthemic vocals of Mali in “Let You Go” during the third act, before the following one, soundtracked by “End Credits” featuring Plan B, sees him out of sorts as water falls from overhead. The film closes with “Program” featuring Irah, during which time the main character dances wildly with a strobe effect emphasizing his movements.
“The film celebrates the euphoria of the rave; the mass gathering of music lovers, and the good and bad parts of a night out,” reads a press release. “Rather than being set in a particular club or location, the film is set in a black space, using lighting and smoke to set the boundaries and size allowing audiences to move from epic and lonely locations to hot, intense and confined spaces within moments.”
The film will be played as visuals during Chase & Status performances. It was recorded in a super-wide aspect ratio, suiting it especially for the 48×4-meter screen used by London venue Drumsheds.
