In a recent interview, Zedd said that he scrapped almost all of his upcoming 2024 album and started over on it.
Zedd has remained relatively quiet in recent years. The Russian-born, German-raised producer and DJ’s last studio-length album was 2014’s True Colors. Ten years later, he looks to break his release hiatus at long last.
In a recent interview, Zedd (real name Anton Zaslavski) shed more light on the upcoming effort. Initially, he took to Instagram at the end of 2023 to tease it as his “most genuine and deeply personal album.”
“I kind of miss the days where albums had meaning and they were able to give you deeper experience than just some random songs slapped together, which in my opinion a lot of albums these days are,” he told USA TODAY. “There’s not really a story to it. And I’ve achieved more in my career than I ever dreamed of being able to achieve, so I just ask myself the question what the point would be to making an album if it wasn’t to do something that’s deeply special and honest and would give fans the experience that I kind of crave and can rarely find these days.”
Zaslavski first took inspiration from a 2007 album called † (also known as Cross) by Justice — a French duo who also happen to have a 2024 album on the way after a long release hiatus. His first taste of success as Zedd came courtesy of his 2010 debut single, “The Anthem,” after he won a series of Beatport remix contests. His 2012 debut album Clarity went certified platinum, and the 2015 follow-up, True Colors, featured A-list collaborators like Selena Gomez and Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic.
Four years ago, Zaslavski replied to the tweet of a fan asking when he would release another album with a tweet of his own that simply read “2020.” Apparently, he largely scrapped this effort and went back to the drawing board.
“Pretty much started from scratch and worked with artists that have inspired me to be who I am today,” he told USA TODAY, “worked with artists without those I would never make the music I make, without those I would never have the musical education I was able to have.”
Zaslavski continued: “And really went deep into myself to find what it is that makes albums special that made me grow up, listen to them and wanna create stuff like it. So that’s the reason it’s been taking so long, but I’m very, very far along and can finally promise that it’s gonna come out this year.”
No title, release date or any other specific information is available for Zedd’s upcoming 2024 album as of yet.
