Sammy Virji arguably leads the UK Garage renaissance in the West.
Enter Sammy Virji, the freshest face in electronic music, renowned for his distinctive blend of UK garage beats with elements of bassline and house. Crowned the king of “feel-good garage” by Red Bull for undeniably bouncy tracks like “If U Need it” and, more recently, “Moonlight,” Virji took center stage at a sold out Sound Nightclub in Los Angeles on Friday, February 16 as part of his North American Tour. With accolades like Spotify’s Artists to Watch in 2024 and a DJ Mag Best of British nomination under his belt, anticipation for Virji’s performance was sky-high – and he delivered.
Nestled on the vibrant streets of Hollywood Blvd, Sound Nightclub opened its doors to eager fans at 10pm. Vibrant red lasers and pulsating bass from Pioneer speakers greeted attendees, transforming the dance floor into a sea of energy adorned with Renaissance-style artwork and glowing red lanterns.
The night commenced with a dynamic set from renowned HE.SHE.THEY and Ants Ibiza resident SYREETA, seamlessly blending popular house with Afro and Latin-inspired beats. SYREETA’s skillful, 2.5-hour performance set the perfect tone, maintaining energy levels without overshadowing Virji’s unique vibe.
From the moment doors opened, a diverse crowd flooded the dance floor with another surge of attendees as the night progressed. By 11:30pm, the venue was packed, with revelers clamoring to experience the Virji phenomenon. LA locals marveled at Sound Nightclub’s transformation, though many admittedly unfamiliar with the garage genre perceived the show as a fusion of house, dubstep, and drum and bass.
A surprise special guest sent Sound into overdrive and solidified the Virji’s hype.
As Virji took the stage, phones lit up to capture every electrifying moment. Launching into his set with “Daga Da,” Virji seamlessly transitioned between tracks, including new gems like Oppidan’s “Mr. Sandman.”
The night reached its peak when Chris Lake made a surprise appearance, sending the crowd into a frenzy with unreleased tracks and collaborations. The unexpected fusion of garage and tech house left fans craving more, cementing the night as a historic moment on Hollywood Blvd.
The night was not without its setbacks. Overcrowding, lengthy bathroom lines, and ticketing confusion left some attendees frustrated, signaling a need for improved organization at future sold-out events.
Despite the challenges, Sammy Virji’s performance at Sound Nightclub was a testament to the growing influence of UKG in the States. As attendees left the venue, brimming with excitement and drenched in sweat from hours of dancing, it was evident that they had experienced something extraordinary: a glimpse into the future of electronic music, guided by the incomparable Sammy Virji.
