Much like its recorded DJ sets, broadcasting platform Cercle’s Echo System podcasts will explore different locations.

Since 2016, Cercle has carved out a unique lane within the dance music ecosystem by filming the performances of world-famous dance music artists in exotic settings. It looks to apply a similar approach to podcasting through a new series called Echo System by Cercle.

Cercle has partnered with BBC journalist Frank McWeeny on Echo System. Each installment will see him explore a different location and share “moments that until now have remained untold,” according to a press release. Three episodes are now available: “Luxor, Egypt,” “Iceland,” and Geneva, Switzerland.”

Here’s the kicker. None of the episodes thus far have anything to do with DJs, controllerists, or any other kind of electronic musicians. “Luxor, Egypt” chronicles a Muslim farmer’s connection to his Christian neighbors. “Iceland” opens a window into the life of an artisan who crafts stone instruments. “Geneva, Switzerland” offers a deep dive into historic events that shaped the city of its namesake.

Why the departure? Cercle Founder and CEO Derek Barbolla explains it best. “I feel it’s more than just an audio journey; it’s a cultural and narrative bridge connecting the extraordinary locations of our Cercle shows, the artists we invite and our global audience,” he said, according to a press release. “We want to enrich the Cercle experience by going beyond music and unveil the hidden stories behind each selected site, city, or country, weaving together travel narratives, local history, culture, and music.”

McWeeny added that little is scripted and the the direction of each episode depends on some amount of discovery. He said, “I make audio documentaries for a living, but I’ve never made anything quite like this, where there is very little preparation and no planned or even loose narrative. You are totally at the mercy of what the journey throws at you and the people you meet. It’s all about being curious, open-minded and letting it all unravel step by step, just like a real solo adventure!“

Echo System by Cercle is currently available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Amazon Music, and Podcast Index.
