Starya Shows Us Why Los Angeles Is Home with New Mix

Los Angeles-based artist Starya spins up a mix for This Is Home that highlights her new track “The Garden,” her influences, and more.

Starya is a star in the making in the dance music scene. From her early work with artists like Durante and Mija under the Tuff Ghost alias to the more recent journey she’s embarked on under this new one, she continues to turn heads with her dreamy, vocal-driven sound. This multi-talented artist has influences that stem from house and techno to dubstep and hip-hop, and she’s truly come into her own with a blend of hauntingly beautiful pop-house sounds under this new moniker.

The first track to arrive from Starya, “The Garden,” arrived on June 10 via Popgang Records and leans heavily into the bloghouse influences that helped usher her into the scene after moving to Los Angeles. The synth layers and kicks drive the track forward while the textures and twinge of electro add a touch of energy to make this track one that’s sublime. But it’s the beautiful vocals from Starya that really take “The Garden” to the next level as she leaves listeners under her spell.

“The Garden” is just a taste of what’s to come from Starya as she presses on into the rest of 2022 and beyond – and if you’re craving more then you’re in luck as she’s gifted us with a mix to feast your ears on. This 30-minute ride sees her put her own tunes and biggest influences from the scene on full display with curated tracks from artists like Justice, Boys Noize, Tiga, Alex Metric and Oliver, and more.

LA is where I discovered my love for dance music. I moved here in 2008 and that’s when the electro/blog house scene was blowing up. For me it all started with Justice, so that’s how I started my mix. I let that blog house thread run throughout with some shoutouts to other inspirations and artists that have been huge parts of my journey along the way – like Skrillex, Mija, Durante – as well as some of my past releases under my former moniker “Tuff Ghost.”
