The Chinese pop sensation, G.E.M., has been recently named the ambassador for the Mending Kids Charity, with visits to orphanages in China planned and a portion of merchandise sales going to the charity!
A common theme that many artists we’ve spoken with over the years has been their desire to give back to the community in some capacity or another. While some have chosen to launch their own charities or projects, donate dollars from record sales, and more, others have decided to really champion a message or cause. Much like artists who reside in the US, and companies that are based here too, we are always looking for those who are trying to help change the world in a positive way. Enter G.E.M., who has recently become the Global Celebrity Ambassador for the Mending Kids Charity.
For those of you who may not G.E.M., let’s introduce her really quick. She’s a huge pop star in China who has five albums that have reached the #1 spot in the country and has a massive following of devoted fans as well. This very talented artist, who was named Asian Artist of the Year by Billboard China, has quickly risen to the top of the scene. She also recently sang the theme song for the Mandarin language version of Passengers, which you can check out below! The charity she now represents, Mending Kids, is a non-profit that is known for providing life-changing operations not just in China, but in 63 countries around the world. They raise funds to allow for the world’s top surgeons to provide services and surgical care that never would have been possible before, completely free of charge.
As the Global Celebrity Ambassador for the non-profit, G.E.M. will be visiting the surgical sites and actually get more involved with the program’s mission too. Meeting with representatives who work tirelessly to provide this amazing service for the underserved, she will also tour a local orphanage and meet with children who are either awaiting their turn or have recently completed a surgery there. Additionally, G.E.M.’s upcoming Queen of Hearts world tour will also be supporting this cause throughout, as it hits China and the rest of Asia in 2017, with their sights set on the USA and Europe next year. The charity will be present at the tour, and proceeds from tour merchandise will be donated to help fund future missions and surgeries.
Speaking about G.E.M. becoming the new Celebrity Ambassador for Mending Kids, Marchelle Sellers, Executive Director of Mending Kids said:
“We couldn’t be more thrilled to partner with a superstar of such epic proportions as G.E.M.! Our work can only do so much but with someone like G.E.M onboard we know our mission will reach further than we’ve ever been able to before. We can’t wait to see the impact this will bring to all the less fortunate children out there in need. We’re thankful to G.E.M for her passion and desire to be a part of Mending Kids.”
G.E.M. also stated:
“I’m honored to join forces with Mending Kids as their new Global Celebrity Ambassador. I’ve been looking for a cause that I can support and I immediately I fell in love with Mending Kids because they truly make a difference in children’s lives and for me to be a part of that, brings me great happiness. I find it heartbreaking that there are so many children out there who are suffering, not able to receive the serious, life-saving procedures they need to survive or live a comfortable life. I hope that through my tour and my own personal visits and efforts I can bring more awareness and funds to this incredible cause. I’ve been incredibly fortunate and every day I’m thankful for that and now I realize what’s next for me is to also give-back, help others, especially children, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to have a partner like Mending Kids to do this with.”
