What was your first electronic music event?
Pop NYE in Oakland CA 2013
What/who influenced you to attend your first event?
My friend who I’ve known since I moved to the West Coast came out of a ten-year retirement to take me to my first event. We had no NYE plans and he knew this event was going on, so he convinced me to go. I have been hooked ever since!
What is one moment from an event that was special and why?
I literally had NO idea what to expect out of this! I’ve listened to electronic dance music since I was 14, but had never gone to an event. A bunch of my friends had done tons of underground events, but I was a nerd in high school and stayed at home a lot. What made me fall in love with the scene was the fact that everyone was SO incredibly kind. No one cared what anyone looked like, where they were from, what they did for a living. It was all about ACCEPTANCE.
My favorite moment was when I was given my first piece of kandi. I like to do photography (amateur) and took a great picture of this girl and her boyfriend. They wanted to do hearts with their hands, but it looked off. I fixed them, took the picture. Five minutes later she came back and gave me the kandi. I thought she was doing some weird gang signs at first (LOL!), but then my friend told me all about PLUR and I could not stop smiling.
What is your favorite festival or event?
Nocturnal and Beyond Wonderland at San Manuel Amphitheatre are probably my favorite. Sorry, can’t choose one! There’s something about the way this venue brings people together. The hill especially! It’s such a great meeting and chill spot!
What is your favorite electronic song and why?
I’m a Libra, so this is an impossible question for me to answer. However, if I could choose one it would be Favulous – You. This song has so much meaning in my personal life. It’s about LOVE, but I see it as not only love in a partner but LOVE for people in your life. One of my rave brothers introduced the song to me at Dada Life in 2015, and I always play it. It calms me.
Who are your favorite artists?
Kaskade is bae. Always. Not only is he a great soul, but his music always speaks to me. Others, Bro Safari, Laidback Luke, Seven Lions, Ben Nicky, Dannic, Tritonal, Will Sparks, so many others.
What are your favorite genres?
Hmm, this one is tough for me too. I am a music lover, so I really have an ear for it all. If I had to pick some though; bounce, dubstep, house (no specific genre), techno, and psytrance.
What do you feel your “Identity” is in the electronic music community?
I’m still finding my place. I recently started working with Neon Owl on the side to help send their message of community. They’re a music media lifestyle brand with a 100% focus on charity. Currently, I do interviews with DJs when they’re playing shows on the West Coast. I realized that I was spending too much time focused on my day job and moving further in life, but not giving enough back to the community. This company combines my love of music with philanthropy so I knew it was a great fit.
Is there anything else you would like to add about yourself for the readers?
I’m always towards the back or sides at events hanging out with my friends or shuffling! Come say hi, I love meeting new people.
