What was your first electronic music event?

2009 was the first year I discovered the electronic music scene. In the Spring I hesitantly discovered a festival called “Fuente”, a literal Oasis in the middle of the Mexican desert. That summer, I started getting the hang of it and attended “Elysium” in San Diego, California. And by Summer 2009 I attended “Burning Man” in Reno, Nevada and was completely hooked!

What/who influenced you to attend your first event?

I actually found EDM festivals though the Jam Band scene. At the age of 22, I had never been to a rave and I definitely would not consider myself a raver by any means. I had been going to Phish, String Cheese Incident, and Bluegrass Festivals. Then by literal accident I found this scene. I was on my way to a Jam Band festival in Las Vegas, Nevada in October 2008, and crashed my car. Everyone survived but I was so upset for months afterwards, and my friends bought me a ticket to “Fuente” so I could relax  and take my mind off the past.

What is one moment from an event that was special and why?

I remember stepping foot inside this EDM festival and thinking it was going to be a negative experience, but quickly realized about how amazingly similar it was to the Jam Band scene, people there were free to be themselves with no apology, dressed how they wanted, acted how they wanted, and how free-spirited the entire event was. I realized I could define myself any way I wanted, and I am free to express myself as I please.

What is your favorite festival or event?

Burning Man will always hold a special place in my heart. Many of the original local EDM festivals I went to are no longer running, SoCal Decompression, Fuente, Elysium, Xara Delzura, just to name a few. I will always love the local homegrown feeling of Lucidity, YouTopia, Desert Hearts, and Lightning in a Bottle always has a great lineup.

What is your favorite electronic song and why?

I can’t say I ever have one favorite of anything. It feel so limiting haha. My favorite song changes as quickly as my mood.

Who are your favorite artists?

Bonobo, Thievery Corporation, Beats Antique, Gotan Project, Desert Dwellers, Tipper, Analogik, Bluetech, DJ Food, Transglobal Underground, Justin Martin, Mr Scruff, Caravan Palace, Zeb, Amon Tobin, RJD2, Ratatat,

What are your favorite genres?

I like lower BPM than most people, I will admit it. I like chill music that makes me want to groove and dance, My favorites are Electroswing, Electrojazz, Downtempo, Acid Jazz, Dub, Breakbeat, Funky House, Tropical House, Chill Out,

What do you feel your “Identity” is in the electronic music community?

My “Identity” in this scene definitely stems from my company Circus Mafia, which I started in 2011. Based in San Diego, I use this company to help promote, advertise and book my circus performer and flow artist friends for EDM festivals and corporate gigs all over the world. It is such a rewarding feeling to be able to help myself and others share their passion with the world! I am also a fire performer for the Conclave at Burning Man and have choreographed routines for the Inner Circle.

Is there anything else you would like to add about yourself for the readers?

The entire concept for Circus Mafia was thought of during an EDM music festival, so I am 100% thankful to have festivals like these in my life to help people find their passion and fuel their creativity. Every day, when you wake up, you choose who you want to be. If you have a dream, all it takes is to just start living it every day. It won’t happen over night, but one day you will wake up and realize anything is possible with a little hard work and a lot of passion. Today is the first day of the rest of your life!
